In 2024, the ferry carried over 305,000 passengers, making it the 6th busiest Route out of the 30 Routes served by CalMac. About the Ferry User Group
The Sound of Sleat Ferry Users Group was established in 2025, and aims to represent the interests of businesses and communities served by the Mallaig-Armadale ferry crossing.
The Group is being supported by the West Highland Chamber of Commerce and the first formal meeting took place on Wednesday 9th July 2025.
The aim of the Group is to provide an effective lobbying channel representing the interests of those businesses and communities served by ferries to CalMac and CMAL.
The Steering Committee is made up of representatives from various businesses and organisations on both sides of the Sound of Sleat who meet four times a year.
There is also an Executive Group who respond to shorter term issues as and when they arise.

Where does the ferry go?
The ferry runs between Mallaig on the mainland (approx 1 hours drive from Fort William) and Armadale, on the Sleat Peninsula.
In Summer (late March to mid October), there are typically two RoRo vessels taking vehicles and their passengers. There are normally about 8-9 crossings each way.
In Winter, a smaller capacity vessel (MV Lochnevis) normally operates two sailings a day (morning and late afternoon) in addition to its daily sailings to the Small Isles (Eigg, Rhum, Muck, and Canna)

It is possible to buy tickets at the relevant Port Offices, but as this Route is very popular travel cannot be guaranteed.
